THROUGH THESE DOORS
Following are just some of the shelter visitors during our busy spring season from January 1 through May 31:
- 327 songbirds, including 47 sparrows, 56 finches and 34 scrub jays...
- 78 mallards, 66 of which were orphaned, lost or sick ducklings...
- A baby American kestrel found huddling in the corner of a hangar at Moffett Field, as well as two adult female kestrels who got caught in a chimney while fighting...
- Raptor count: 11 barn owls, six great horned owls, two turkey vultures, one sharp-shinned hawk and one Cooper's hawk. Two of the great horned owls were suffering the effects of ingesting poisoned rodents from the Stanford area-a reminder that poisoning often has unintended and tragic side effects.
- A young dusky-footed wood rat, a favorite of ours at WRI, is doing well after he was found alone and crying in a member's yard...
- Imagine our surprise when Palo Alto Animal Services brought us an orphaned baby bobcat! He is now at Wildcare in Marin, where he'll be raised with another bobcat roughly the same age.
