Volunteer Job Descriptions

Volunteers are a critical element to the success of Wildlife Rescue! Here are just some of the details on what these volunteers do.

Clinic Volunteer

Time Commitment: Varies (4 ½ -5 hrs per week depending on shift)
Duration: March through October
Minimum Age: 18 or on completion of Junior Volunteer Program
Supervisor: Shift Captain

The Job: The Clinic Volunteer works hands on with injured & orphaned wildlife in our facility. A large amount of the animal care is handled by this volunteer position. Mainly, the Clinic Volunteer is responsible for the animal husbandry, or in other words, the day-to-day care. General duties include the following: feeding and weighing animals, cleaning floors, countertops & caging, and other general tasks.

Clinic Volunteers are required to commit to one shift per week. Shifts are available 7 days a week as follows:

Morning: 9am – 2pm
Afternoon: 1:30pm – 6pm
Evening 5:30pm – 10pm

Required Training: Basic Training

Evening Hotline Volunteer

Time Commitment: 3 hrs per week
Duration: Year Round
Minimum Age: 18
Supervisor: Animal Care Coordinator

The Job: The Evening Hotline Volunteer is also a member of our Education Program and is responsible for assisting the public by answering calls from our Wildlife Hotline between the hours of 5pm and 8pm. Incoming phone calls to our hotline, (650) 494-SAVE, after 5pm are referred to your home telephone number.

Hotline Volunteers are required to commit to one shift per week. Shifts are available 7 days a week from 5pm to 8pm and are done from your home.

Required Training: Hotline & Reception Class

Hotline & Animal Intake Volunteer

Time Commitment: 3 ½ hrs per week
Duration: March – October
Minimum Age: 18
Supervisor: Animal Care Coordinator

The Job: The Hotline/Animal Intake Volunteer is a member of our Education Program and is responsible for interfacing with the public. In this position, you will work almost exclusively with people, helping to educate the community on living with urban wildlife. General duties include answering our Urban Wildlife Hotline, fielding questions from the public about wildlife and greeting the public and transferring incoming animals to the clinic as well as signing them in. In addition, you may also be asked to help with other administrative tasks such as mailings and database entry.

Hotline/Animal Intake Volunteers are required to commit to one shift per week. Shifts are available 7 days a week as follows:

Morning: 10:00 AM – 1:30 PM
Afternoon: 1:30 PM – 5:00 PM

Required Training: Hotline & Reception Class

Junior Volunteer

Time Commitment: 3 hours per week
Duration: June through August
Minimum Age: 15
Supervisor: Shift Captain

The Job: Junior Volunteers are between 15 and 17 years of age and are a part of our Youth Program. The Junior Volunteer works in the clinic, supporting the Clinic Volunteers and Shift Captains. After the required three months as a Junior Volunteer and pending evaluation by the ACC and Shift Captain you are able to move into a Clinic Volunteer position. General duties include washing & sterilizing dishes & caging and food preparation.

Please note that Junior Volunteers do not handle animals and one or more parent is required to attend a Volunteer Interview.

Junior Volunteers are required to commit to one shift per week. Shifts are available 7 days a week as follows:

Morning 11am – 2pm
Late Afternoon 3pm – 6pm
Required Training: Junior Volunteer Class

Wildlife Education Volunteer

Time Commitment: 3 hours per month
Duration: Year Round
Minimum Age: 18
Supervisor: Wildlife Education Team Manager

The Job: The Wildlife Education Team Volunteer is another member of our Education Program and is responsible for giving educational presentations to community groups of all ages. Presentations are varied depending on age of group and may also consist of an education animal. Wildlife Education Team Volunteers are also trained to handle our education animals, which currently include a Great Horned Owl, a Red-shouldered Hawk, an American Kestrel and a Pacific Gopher Snake. Volunteers may do presentations, handle the education animals or both.

Wildlife Education Team Volunteers are required to commit to one presentation per month. Times vary, but are generally during the weekday.

Completion of Apprentice Program
