How Kids Can Help

So you want to help, but you aren’t old enough to be a Junior Clinic Volunteer? No worries - there are plenty of ways in which YOU can make a difference to the lives of wildlife where you live…

Fun Things to Do

Make a bird deflector!

birddeflectorflyerscan.gifYou can help stop birds flying into windows at home, by making this very simple but effective bird deflector.

All you need are:

  • A piece of string (long enough to hang from just above window to about 1/3 from the bottom)
  • A small pine cone (a large one might hit the window too hard if it’s windy)
  • Strips of shiny silver paper or tin foil

Tie the string firmly around the narrow end of the pinecone. Tie silver foil at 12” intervals along the string. Attach the string under the eaves above the window, OUTDOORS, with tape/ cuphook/ thumbtack. That’s all there is to it.

Your window is no longer a danger to our feathered friends!

Wildlife Rescue gives out bird deflectors at the clinic, saving birds from harm, and helping animals in the clinic at the same time. You can help by collecting pinecones, or by donating string or silver paper. Or why not get a group of friends together and make some bird deflectors for us?

Fund-Raising

Even the smallest amount can make a difference! Money raised for Wildlife Rescue helps care for wildlife in your area.

$2.50 buys a roll of paper towels
$5 buys 2 boxes of sandwich sticks for feeding the mockingbirds & bushtits
$15 buys 5 jars of peanut butter for “peanut butter crumble” for the birds
$20 buys 4 large laundry baskets for bird housing
$50 buys 2 small animal carriers for the baby squirrels
$100 buys 50 rolls of paper towels for lining baskets

Here are some suggestions of ways you can raise money for Wildlife Rescue:

  • Have a bake sale
  • Wash your neighbors’ cars and ask them for donations
  • Set yourself a goal, like not eating candy for a week, and get sponsored to do it
  • Save up all your coins in a Piggy Bank - they soon add up!

I’m sure you can think of many more yourself. Have fun!

We also collect useful things that you might find at home. For a list of things we collect, click here.

Invite Us To Speak to Your School or Community Group!

The Wildlife Education Team gives fun and informative presentations for ages 3 and up on Bay Area wildlife and what Wildlife Rescue does. The volunteer team (with the help of a Great Horned Owl, a Red-shouldered Hawk, an American Kestrel and a Pacific Gopher Snake) is available to visit your school or community group. A visit from the Wildlife Education Team is a hands-on, lively session that kids won’t forget in a hurry. And it’s affordable too! Contact us for more information today!
